Many times multiple placements on 1st page of all SE

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

We have made the first page many times in the top 3 spots on several keywords. We have not used an SEO, however, we have followed guidelines used by SEO experts. I also think that it is important to be top of mind in your marketplace, rather than top of mind on Google. Both is infinitely better. Sometimes, those with deep pockets can make themselves #1 on all sites, the key is will they perform when the lead comes in. A while back we posted a blog called Spinning a Good Yarn, where I (Alexandra) responded to a #1 ad on Google for a yarn store. When I got there during regular business hours, the store was closed and shabby looking (not as advertised or promised), and subsequently as I see it every so often, nothing much has changed! We have to keep our promises if we are aiming for #1

First page google results are attainable. I am a real estate marketing consultant, not an SEO expert and I have consistent first page placement for the keywords I am targeting. You have to be diligent and consistent in your efforts.

One more thing I would like to add, if you do not employ an Integrated Social Media Marketing strategy your efforts are not all they can be. An integrated strategy incorporates both offline and online marketing efforts.

Always take a look at your market and your niche, not just what everyone else says you should do. The key is to face your market.

Depending upon an agent's geographic market area, it can be relatively easy to get a real estate site on first page of Google's organic results for less competitive keyphrases and, with time and effort, even for very competitive keyphrases. For example, I've gotten a client's site from page 10 of Google to page 3 for "Bronx NY homes for sale" and have gotten him on page 1 for hundreds of keyphrases for areas within the Bronx, increasing his traffic by 500% in about six months.

The biggest mistake that I see agents make is optimizing their sites -- or letting SEO companies optimize their sites -- for "easy" keyphrases that don't get them any traffic even if they are on page 1. Keyword research is vitally important.

It's sad that many agents believe that they can't get on page 1, so they don't try.
